In an era where the greatest luxury is time, we believe in experiencing it at an unhurried pace, in harmony with our surroundings, whether shaped by nature or by culture. From the grounded luxury of Comporta to the laidback, cosmopolitan elegance of Lisbon, Sublime offers authentic and diverse experiences, always deeply connected to our roots. In both places, no two rooms are alike, every detail is considered, and hospitality feels personal, intuitive and warm: a home away from home, wherever you find us.
It was 2001 and he was with his wife Patricia Trigo and a group of friends. It never occurred to him, that at some point in the future, he would build one of the most prestigious hospitality projects in Comporta here. He was, though, immediately enchanted by the area, so accessible and yet so unspoilt, and started thinking about building a holiday home there. While they were saving up, with that in mind, Gonçalo started looking for suitable land. Unable to find anything, he took the initiative to place an advert in Diário de Notícias. ‘I would like to buy land in Comporta’ it read. Words that would change the course of his destiny, leaving an indelible mark on the region. As they spent more and more time there, working on their house, Gonçalo noticed visitors choosing Comporta, rather than Saint Tropez or Sardinia for their holidays, and realized that a trend was starting, where those in the know would soon be flooding into Comporta, where few hotels existed. It was at that point that Gonçalo and Patricia pivoted and what had been imagined as a private home took on greater ambitions. They decided to open a boutique hotel.
An integrated experience, rather than just a bed for the night, was born. It was Sublime. That first building now houses our spa. Provençal in inspiration, with a nod to St. Tropez, we made it with large open windows cutting through the structure so that nature could come in. The idea of the Comporta ‘cabin’ would come later. For the interiors Gonçalo and Patricia wanted something simple and understated, yet welcoming and comfortable. Something clean-lined but softer than minimalist, drawing on wood, different textures and objects collected from their various travels.
In 2016, they took a major leap forward, Gonçalo began to realize that there was room for the project to expand in both the areas of hospitality and real estate. He started building villas sold them and then operated them as hotel units throughout the year. That same year, the main building was also constructed – where the reception is now located – and this is when their contemporary take on the traditional vernacular architecture of the Comporta cabin began to take shape; the thatched roof giving way to wood and zinc, while maintaining the geometric forms that define the territory. The harmony with the surrounding environment, a guiding principle from the very beginning, was always non-negotiable. Nature reigns supreme. That is why the houses are positioned according to the trees, fitting them in rather like a game of Tetris, and always building them with large glass openings to bring the outside in.
Fashioned in ‘Comporta style’ (using regional materials, with a strong emphasis on textures), the bio-pools cemented Sublime’s place on the global hospitality stage. About this time, Gonçalo and Patrícia met interior designer Rita Andringa, who was not involved with the bio-pools project but would later be responsible for the interiors of the Beach Club. This opened in 2020 and was conceived as an extension of the hotel, maintaining the essence of Sublime, but by the sea.
